The Guild [web series]

Postby Chevalier Bayard » Thu 09 Jul, 2009 00:32

This show has already been mentionned several times around TLF and we even had a banner for watchtheguild.com last year. Far time we have a topic dedicated to it ! ;)

Image

The Guild cannot be seen on TV but is the first web series to have its dedicated topic (and more should come ;)). It appears quite normal on a gamer forum as The Guild is a series "written for gamers, about gamers by a gamer".

The gamer in question is my future candidate for roxor TLFer, the living dream of all gamers: Felicia Day :bounce5: , one of the Whedon's girls (she appeared in Buffy as V and also plays a main role in the great Dr Horrible) but also an hardcore gamer and a great writer as we can see it watching The Guild. The story wants that after a two years addiction to WOW Felicia Day decided to use her experiences in the writing of a sitcom where she would break the stereotypes about gamers and show their variety without missing their defaults :D

Image

In The Guild she plays Cyd Sherman, a gamer who goes under the alias of Codex, her healer character in a medieval fantastic MMORPG she is addicted to. She is a member of her guild, The Knights of Good which also counts (from top to down and left to right on the picture up there):
  • Bladezz (Vincent Caso), the guild rogue,
  • Vork (Jeff Lewis), the guild leader,
  • Zaboo (Sandeep Parikh), the guild warlock,
  • Tinkerballa (Amy Okuda), the guild ranger,
  • and Clara, the guild's Gnome Mage.
In real life they go under the names:
  • Simon,
  • Herman Holden,
  • Sujan Balakrishnan Goldberg,
  • ... Tinkerballa ... as far as the other members of the Guild know :D
  • Clara.
All with very very different (real) lives which will make the richness of the series while we get to know better each of them :)

The characters of Zabou and Vork have been written for Sandeep Parikh and Jeff Lewis who Felicia Day already knew from the Empty Stage Comedy Theater, a sketch comedy and improvisational theatre in Los Angeles. The rest of the cast was filled through auditions.

The dvd for season#2 has just been released on amazon.com but you can watch all the 2 seasons for free: Many opportunities to watch the show for free and you won't lose your time as it is clearly one of the best surprises of these last years in the comedy sitcom genre, and clearly the best comedy show for gamers :D

Not convinced yet ? Well, take 3'59 and watch the very first episode :)

Now that several hours have passed and you've watched the two seasons in a row ... you'll be happy to know that season #3 has been announced today and we should see a preview of it on August !

A very impressive success when you know that after having filmed the three first episodes (in two and a half day) the crew had run out of money and that episodes #4 and #5 have nearly only been paid through a Paypal donation link ! :gj:

Image

As it is really a precursor and an inspiration for many shows to follow, I gladly mark The Guild with a great 6/6 and can't wait for my dvds to arrive ! :bounce:

I had forgotten to stop by here and mention that Wil Wheaton was playing in the 3rd season currently online !

He plays the leader of a Knights of Good's rival guild known as Axis of Anarchy. And now that Wesley Crusher is involved I should at least have caught Skaila's Trekkie attention :D

... :borg: resistance is futile :borg: ...

By the way, in case anyone didn't hear, there may be a lot more episodes of The Guild to come in the future. They now have corporate sponsorship thanks to an exclusive distribution deal they signed with Microsoft making XBox Live and Zune Marketplace the sole online distributors of past episodes.

Season 4 is announced!! :bounce: :bounce:

We’re pleased to announce that Season 4 of The Guild is official – Microsoft has renewed the show for another season and new episodes of The Guild will be coming to Xbox, Zune and PCs this summer.

Felicia is putting the finishing touches on the script for Season 4, which will pick up where Season 3 left off. Pre-production is underway, keeping producer Kim Evey and Streamy Award winning director Sean Becker very busy as cameras are set to roll sometime in May. Seasons 1 through 3 are currently available on watchtheguild.com, iTunes, Amazon and YouTube.

Microsoft has sponsored The Guild since season 2. The Guild thanks Microsoft – along with all the fans – for continued support of the show.
